Typical residential range is $32–$68 per linear foot depending on material, height and terrain.

Fence Installation & Repair material options and installed price ranges
Material Installed
Vinyl privacy fence Zero staining, no rot, holds its color. The most popular choice for Montgomery County backyards. $38 – $58 / ft
Cedar & pressure-treated wood Warm, classic look. Board-on-board and shadowbox styles give privacy without trapping wind. $32 – $52 / ft
Ornamental aluminum Pool-code compliant, powder-coated, and rust-proof. Preferred by most HOAs for front yards. $45 – $68 / ft
Chain-link Budget-friendly containment for pets and large lots. Black vinyl-coated options available. $22 – $34 / ft

Ranges reflect typical Montgomery and Howard County residential projects and include materials, labor, permit filing and haul-away. Steep grade, rock, limited access or custom detailing can move the number. Your written estimate is a fixed price, not a range.

FAQ

Fences & Gates questions we get weekly

Do I need a permit to install a fence in Montgomery County?

Yes. Montgomery County requires a permit for fences over 6.5 feet, and most municipalities require one at any height. We prepare and file the application as part of your project — you do not need to visit the permit office.

How deep do fence posts need to be set in Maryland?

Maryland frost depth is roughly 30 inches. We set posts a minimum of 30–36 inches in concrete footings so frost heave cannot lift or lean the line.

Who is responsible for the finished side of the fence?

Most Maryland jurisdictions and HOAs require the finished side to face your neighbor. Board-on-board and shadowbox styles look identical from both sides, which avoids the issue entirely.

"A-1 replaced 180 feet of failing chain-link with cedar board-on-board. Cesar walked the property line with our neighbor before starting, which prevented a dispute we were dreading. Permits were handled and the crew finished in two days."
